DC International School A secondary (6-12) middle/high school International Baccalaureate Middle Years (6-10) and Diploma Program (11 and 12) Language Focus and partial immersion in 3 languages: Chinese, Spanish and French Continued language for students in our member schools and beginning language path for new students

  3. Leadership 5 public charter school members: DC Bilingual, Elsie Whitlow Stokes, Latin American Montessori Bilingual, Mundo Verde, and Washington Yu Ying Governed by a Board of Trustees made up of leadership from each member school. Will be expanded to included community and parent trustees. Member schools/leaders have amended their charters and worked to create this new model.   4. Mission “DC International School fosters inquiring, engaged, knowledgeable and caring secondary students who are multi-lingual, culturally competent, and committed to proactively creating a socially just and sustainable world”

Middle / High School Experience The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (grades 6-10) and IBCC and Diploma programmes (grades 11-12) Language immersion in target language plus opportunity to add a third language Rich offering of transdisciplinary content, technology, arts, community service, and athletics, overlaid with global perspective, social justice and environmental stewardship An extended school day and after-school programming

  6. Middle / High School Experience International Baccalaureate: a prestigious and rigorous program of study leading to the MYP certificate and IB Diploma or IB Career Certificate. All students will participate in IB coursework. Inquiry-based and interdisciplinary Community service, personal project, and extended writing components Potential for substantial college credit

Middle / High School Experience Partial Language Immersion: French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese Students who are enrolling from member schools will continue on their language pathway Older siblings coming in through sibling preference will follow their sibling’s language pathway Lottery enrollees will select a first, second, and third choice and will be assigned a language pathway

Middle / High School Experience Partial Language Immersion: Students will take their target language every day as well as either content area subjects and/or language electives Students newer to language will be offered more classes in English but are still required to take a language course every day We encourage acquisition of additional languages through electives

  9. Middle / High School Experience Environmental Stewardship and Social Justice: Sustainable practices Community service Action within school and community Internationalism and global focus Travel and exchanges

Program Details School day: 8:15-4:15 Alternating A/B schedule: Approaches to Learning, English, Language B, Math every day PE/Health, Fine Arts, Science, Humanities, Electives every other day Brunch and Lunch Afterschool programming: Clubs and Athletics Students will have personal technology Interim location for 1-2 years and then permanent location at Delano Hall at Walter Reed

  15. Timeline Now until August 2014 planning year – working to open the school. In residency at our member schools. 2014-5 open with 200 6th and 7th graders (DCB, Stokes, LAMB and Yu Ying students plus older siblings and lottery seats) 2015-16 - open in Delano Hall with 6th, 7th and 8th Grade 2020 our first students graduate from DCI

  16. Preparing your child Work on keyboarding skills! There are many free online programs. http://www.typingweb.com/ Learn to take the bus and travel more independently Consider mobile phone use and rules Start mapping out homework plans/schedules Practice self-advocacy skills Talk about cyber and personal safety
