  2. Vegetables are an important part of our diet.

  3. Georgia farmers produce many vegetables for the fresh market.

  4. Vegetables are an economically important crop for Georgia farmers. In1999 the total wholesale value of fresh vegetables produced in Georgia was $531,000,000 Georgia is one of the top five vegetable producing states in the U.S.

  5. Georgia has many factors that makes it ideal for vegetable production. • Suitable soils • Long growing season • Available water

  6. Vegetables are produced by direct seeding or by planting transplants.

  7. Direct seeded crops. Squash Carrots Field Peas Beans Greens

  8. Crops from transplants. Peppers Tomatoes Eggplant Onions Cucumbers

  9. Plasticulture is often used with transplants.

  10. Most vegetable crops require the following: • Intensive pest management. • High production costs. • Greater labor costs.

  11. Most vegetables must be harvested by hand.

  12. Harvested vegetables are taken from the field to a packing shed where they are cleaned, packed, and cooled.

  13. Vegetables destined for shipment are loaded onto refrigerated trucks for transport.

  14. Many vegetables are sold at local roadside markets.

  15. Commercial vegetable production will continue to increase in Georgia as farmers diversify into crops with higher profit potential.
