People form bonds with each other to meet their needs reach goals, help others ie. • Marriages, friends, family • clubs, sports, teams, • gangs, cults, • business companies, political parties, • social movements and protests, • churches, temples, mosques • community service groups WHAT HOLDS CANADIAN SOCIETY TOGETHER?What would our society be like without these groups?

  4. How do Sociologists name and describe different types of groups? SIMPLE TO COMPLEX: THE LARGER THE GROUP THE GREATER THE STRUCTURE NEEDED FOR IT TO FUNCTION EFFECTIVELY - RULES, PROCESSES, DEFINED ROLES, MISSION STATEMENTS, ACCOUNTABILITY ETC. Marriage, friendship Primary groups: members have close personal relationships, emotional connection ie Family Secondary Groups: members relate in a more formal, less personal way • Roles, structure and rules • ie. Formal Organizations: • Structured Groups that have rules stating who can join the group, who plays what role, and how rules are made and enforced. • These groups can be voluntary or compulsory • Most have a similar hierarchical structure, which is based on levels of power • Made up of both paid and volunteer workers What are the Characteristics of Formal Organizations ?

Bureaucracy: Often formed in order to meet more complex goals • Rigid Operational Style: Things are always done a particular way • Clearly Defined Management Structure: You must “climb the corporate ladder”. • Impersonal – usually no contact with management or input into decisions What are the Characteristics of Bureaucracies?

  8. Utilitarian bureaucracy – operate as a business, make a profit for owners Normative Bureaucracy –based on helping others or improving society Coercive bureaucracy – Force clients into them (ie. Prison) Can you think of an example for each?: Three Categories of Bureaucracy

  16. Summary: • We are not Loners! We are Social creatures and live in Packs! We cooperate in many ways to make life better. We are all members of different types of groups which we join for different reasons and with different goals in mind. • Society Is made up of several different types of groups. • Sociologists categorize (Name) different types of groups in society according to how they are organized and how they function.
