Essay due 20th November • Choose a novel which deals with an important issue: for example poverty, war, family conflict, injustice or any other issue you regard as important. • State what the issue is and show how the characters cope with the issue in the course of the novel or short story. OR • Choose a novel in which a society or a person or a culture or a setting is effectively portrayed. • Show how the writer’s presentation of the subject makes an impact on you, and helps you to understand the subject in greater depth.

  3. A person is effectively portrayed The main character, Derrick Introduction – techniques used throughout the novel: • first person narrative, • Non-Standard English, • Varied typography Brief statement about what the novel is about. Brief statement about what Derrick is like

Body of essay • Start with general: childish, typical nine-year old…(in notes) • Which things fit best with this? • Move to more specific • Childish, cheeky, mischievous • Adventurous, inquisitive • Sensitive, caring - other things, e.g. The Valley • Faithful, loyal – to Gal, “I looks…” • Follow SEX(EXEX)Y paragraph structure

  5. Conclusion • So the reader gets a strong sense of how much Derrick cares about Gal and we admire him for it.

Body of essay • Begins as part of a typical boys’ life: acting tough at beginning, games “sojers”, winding people like Golfies up: inciting violence • More unpleasant side: Bricklayer, domestic violence linked with alcohol, boys made to fight • Aggression inherent in people: Derrick hitting Gal’s head off pavement, Derrick learning from father he admires • Threat from those aggressive, disturbed characters – “Man it was a dangerous place”, Mental Terry, Strangler Joe; destroys the boys’ innocence

  8. Conclusion • So the reader sees the corrupting effect of violence in the society Dillon describes. We know they have escaped Strangler Joe but they cannot escape from violence completely.
