  1. BOKKE MONTH In support of the Springbok rugby team the Johannesburg zoo has chosen the Springbok for our animal of the month. Did you know the “Spring-Buck” are named for the way they make high leaps with stiff legs. There distinguishing feature is a crest of white hair on their backs.   2. ZOO TROT The zoo trot is a great way to keep active. The trot consists of a 5km or 10 km fun run or walk. The route takes you passed some of the most popular enclosures which include: lions, elephants, rhinosand giraffes. It is a great way to reduce stress, build stamina, keep fit and socialize. For every 3 consecutives trots you compete, you receive a medal with one of our zoo animals on them. The challenge is to collect them all The trot will takes place on: Date: 18th September 2011 Time:7:00 for 7:30 Entry fee: Adults: R35.00 VULTURE CONSERVATION WALK Walk in support of the conservation efforts towards the Cape Vulture. The cape vulture is Southern Africa’s only endemic vulture species and is classified as vulnerable. The species is declining rapidly and is already extinct in Swaziland, extinct as a breeding species in Zimbabwe and critically endangered in Namibia with only 12 known wild Cape Vultures. The walk consists of a 5km or 10km fun walk or race and will takes place on: When: 25thSeptember 2011 Time: 7:00 for 7:30 Entry Fee: R40.00 All proceeds from the walk will go towards preserving these magnificent birds.

  3. ANIMALS @ PLAY Our zoo animals are keeping active by playing with balls in different shapes and sizes. This forms part of the zoo’s behavioral enrichment program which encourages species specific behavior. The animals kick, tackle and hunt these balls with the intention of getting the treats inside them. This is a great opportunity to see our animals behaving as they would in the wild. The program starts in September and will run on specific days throughout the year. The next session takes place on: Date Where Time 16th September Spectacled Bear 11:00 17th September Elephants 11:00 23rdSeptember Black & White 11:00 Ruffed Lemurs This is an opportunity not to be missed. TOURS The zoo offers a number of different tour options. Skilled tour guides take you through the zoo and offer insightful information about our zoo animals. The many tours on offer will suit any age group and give you an up close view of our animals. The tours on offer include: Day tours Night tours Behind the scene tours and Zoo Snooze Booking is essential

  4. FEEDING TIMES Learn more about our zoo animals and enjoy their feeding time. Zoo animals are fed at specific times during the day. Each species is given a particular diet with a certain amount of food based on their age and weight. The feeding time takes place weekends and public holidays at the following enclosures: Time Enclosure 10:00 Chimpanzees 11:00 Vultures (Sundays) 11:15 Ground Hornbills 12:00 Polar Bears 12:15 Wild Dogs and Cheetahs 13:00 Crocodile Talk (Sunday) 14:00 Gorillas ZOO BABIES Watch our zoo babies as they start to adapt to their environment under the watchful eye of their mothers. Zoo babies are easy to locate with our “new baby” flags at the enclosure. Some of our new arrivals include: Pygmy Hippo African Buffalo Emperor Tamarin Baby Buff-Cheeked Gibbon Aoudad Cameroon Pygmy Goat Kids Blue Duiker Guttural Toad Arabian Oryx Lamb                    Gemsbok Zulu Sheep Lamb
