  5. New York’s State Flag • The official flag of New York was adopted in 1901. The flag has a dark blue background. It pictures Liberty and Justice. Liberty symbolizes freedom and Justice symbolizes justice before the law. To the left of the shield is Liberty who is holding a pole with a liberty cap, and has a discarded crown at her feet. To the right of the shield is Justice who is blindfolded and holding the scales of justice. The shield that is found between them pictures the sun, hills, and two boats sailing on the Hudson River. A globe and a bald eagle can be found above the shield. A white ribbon that shows theword “EXCELSIOR” is pictured below the shield.Reference source: Enchanted Learning
