  1. AMCP-OSU Chapter Info Session10/17/2016

  2. P&T • Pharmacy and Therapeutics (Not pharmacology and therapeutics) • Hospital systems, insurance providers etc. have P&T committees to determine if they should add a drug to formulary or not • Take into consideration the cost and efficacy of the drug to determine if there is an improvement in health outcomes and if it is worth the money

  3. Background • Formulary: • list of prescription drugs used by practitioners to identify drugs that offer the greatest overall value (efficacy and cost.) A committee of physicians, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists maintain the formulary • Prior Authorization: • requirement that your physician obtain approval from your health insurance plan to prescribe a specific medication. PA is a technique for minimizing costs, as benefits are only paid if the medical care has been pre-approved by the insurance company

  4. What Is The P&T Competition • Real world experience of formulary management • Understanding how to utilize medical and research data for health-care system outcomes • Working with scientific evidence to determine efficacy and economics of patient population • Utilizing disease state guidelines to determine efficacy of drug • Broadening your scope of pharmacy to international regulations of drugs to determine efficacy of treatment

  5. Why Is The P&T Competition Important • Learn how to determine the best treatment outcomes for a patient population • Ensure that patients can get the best possible treatment • Understand the steps that a health-care system needs to take to add a drug on its formulary • Realize the importance of both efficacy and cost to a health-care system • Quality-Adjusted Life-Year (QALY) • Life expectancy adjusted based on utility • QALY = time in health state × utility of state
