Civil Disobedience • Gandhi embraced Hindu traditions especially the idea of nonviolence and respect for all life • Gandhi believed the power of love could convert even the worst of wrongdoers • Gandhi adopted ideas from the west which included civil disobedience or the refusal to obey unjust laws • Gandhi also believed in democracy and nationalism • Do you think that civil disobedience works?

Gandhi’s Actions • Gandhi abandoned western style clothing for Indian traditional clothing to boycott British goods • Gandhi urged Indians to wear clothing only made of cotton grown and woven in India • Protest sometimes lead to violence which went against Gandhi’s ideas of nonviolence • Gandhi would fast, pray and call on his followers to practice self-control 1.
