History Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands Oceania SSWG9 The student will describe the interaction of physical and human systems that have shaped contemporary Oceania, including Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica. c. Analyze the impact isolation has had on the cultural and biological development of the region. d. Describe the various ethnic and religious groups; include major customs and traditions. e. Explain how the migration of diverse ethnic groups and available natural resources have affected the economic and political development.

Original inhabitants of Australia • 50,000 years ago --- crossed a land bridge from SE Asia • Nomadic hunters/gatherers • Lived in small groups • 250 distinct different languages • Commonality among groups was the aborigines respect for nature • Hunted w/ spears, nets, boomerangs (curved throwing sticks) Aborigines

  3. When land bridge sank, aborigines became isolated for thousands of years • European settlers arrive late 1700’s • Europeans bring disease/weapons • Reduce number of aborigines • Today, aborigines only make up 1% of Australia’s population Aborigines continued

  4. 1770--- British sea captain James Cook landed in New Zealand/Australia • 1788-British began to colonize Australia • Australia set up as a prison colony • Great Britain’s prisons were extremely overcrowded • Prisoners sent here to finish sentences • After many people served their sentences, they continued to live in Australia European Influence/Australia

  5. Other settlers from Great Britain flocked to Australia • Reason: British offered settlers cheap land • 1851 --- Australia’s population grew even more due to a gold rush • 1901 --- Australia becomes independent European Influence/Australia continued

  6. New Zealand original inhabitants were the Maori • Came from Pacific Islands around AD 900 • Maori considered hunters, gatherers • Settled mostly on the North Island • Dutch were the first to reach New Zealand in 1642 • 1769– James Cook landed on New Zealand New Zealand/European Influence

  7. British gave Maori property rights • British still controlled the island • 1907 --- New Zealand becomes independent New Zealand/European influence continued
