What works Alliances work because of the people involved (HBS) Clear advantages for both parties (win-win) Progression over time (increasing commitment and involvement) Investing in relationships INCAE’s Alliances & Results What does not work • Formality is not of much importance • Top-down authority • Too broad scope (too many things) • Not clear enough goals • Too much asymmetry Some principles • Best results come out of complementarities • Alliances require investment of time and resources • Organizational idiosincracies play a major role • Payoffs must be clear (“champions” with the necessary political capital) • Alliances must fit strategy
