  1. ANIMAL RESEARCH

  2. Habitat • A habitat is the place where an organism lives. • An organism gets everything is needs from its habitat. • It gets food, water, shelter, and space to live.

  3. Warm or Cold Blooded • Warm-bloodedanimals keep about the same body temperature when the temperature of the air around them changes. • Cold-blooded animals change their body temperature with the air around them. • Mammals and birds are warm-blooded. • Snakes, turtles, lizards, and alligators are cold-blooded.

  4. Vertebrate/Invertebrate • A vertebrate is an animal that has a backbone. • An invertebrate is an animal that does not have a backbone. • Birds, fish, and bears are vertebrates. • Bees, ants, spiders, and worms are invertebrates.

  5. Type of Animal • There are many different types of organisms in the world. • You may have heard of insects, mammals, repitles, birds, fish, and amphibian. These are all types of animals. There are many more types of animals. • A mammal is an animal that has a backbone and is covered with fur or hair. • An amphibian is a cold-blooded animal with a backbone that lives part of its life in the water and part on land. • A reptile is a cold-blooded animal with scales and breathes with lungs.

  6. Food Chain • A food chain is the way food passes from one organism to another in a community. • For example, in a meadow, the grass makes its own food, the mice eat the grass, the snakes eat the mice, and the coyotes eat the snakes.

  7. Prey • Organisms that are captured and eaten by another organism. • Mice are snakes prey.

  8. Predator • Predators are organisms that capture and eat other organims. • Tigers chase and catch antelope for food.

  9. Competition • Competition occurs when one organism works against another to get what it needs to live. • Organism compete for space, water, food, or some other need.

  10. Survival • Some animals thrive. That means they have everything necessary to grow and live. • Some animals adapt. That means they make changes and adjustments so they can continue to live. • Some animals perish. That means they cannot find a way to adapt and they die.

  11. Research Paper • 5 note cards • 1 paragraph about animal’s description and habitat • 1 paragraph about prey/what it eats • 1 paragraph about predator/what eats it • 1 paragraph about interesting facts and details • Picture of your animal
