  2. Forest around the world are an important resource. The commercial value of forestry is over $150 billion per year. • Silviculture: • is the management of forest to produce a renewable supply of timber.

  3. Tree harvesting methods • Clear cutting: • Most common method in BC • All trees in an area are removed then the site is reforested

  4. Selective Logging: • Intermediate or mature trees in an uneven aged forest are cut out. • This helps younger trees to grow • Both limited and costly • Use of helicopters, air ships and small ATV’s are used

  5. Problems with Clear cutting • Siltation • Creeks and rivers get clogged up with mud causing a loss of fish habitats • Visual pollution • Ugly sight usually causes drop in tourism or brings about protests • Loss of wild life habitat • Mud / Land slides • Flooding • Water is not regulated and quickly enters the system • Loss of Carbon sinks

  6. Tropical Rainforest Deforestation • Each year we lose 15,000 sq km of tropical rain forest. • 99% takes place in Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and Columbia • These forest contain over ½ the worlds plants and animal species • At current rate the tropical rain forest will be gone by 2035

  7. Direct Causes: • Subsistence agriculture • Fuel wood • Commercial logging by international corporations. • Ranchers for beef production • 55 sq ft of rainforest for every ¼ pound hamburger of imported beef. • Urbanization

  8. Indirect cause • Rapid population growth • Poverty • Land ownership patterns that favour the wealthy • Use for cash crops that can be exported

  9. Problems • Loss of Oxygen source • Unable to regulate water and soil erosion • Soil degradation • Loss of species • Climate change • Loss of cooling system

  10. Solutions • Do not give money to companies causing the damage • Educate people of developing nations • Develop new energy sources • Redistribute land ownership in developing nations • Nationalization • Aid for food and training • Reduce population growth
