England after Henry VIII • After Henry VIII dies in 1547, each of his surviving children will take the throne: • Edward VI (1547-1553, Henry’s son with Jane Seymour) • Protestant ideas continue to spread, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer prepares the Book of Common Prayer (1549) • Mary I (1553-1558, Henry’s daughter with Catharine of Aragon) • Makes England Catholic again, arrests and burns hundreds of Protestants (her nickname becomes “Bloody Mary”). • Marries her Hapsburg cousin Phillip II (king of Spain and the Netherlands, son of Charles V, “The Most Catholic King”)

  4. The Elizabethan Age • Elizabeth I (1558-1603, Henry’s daughter with Anne Boleyn): • Returns England to Protestantism and the Anglican Church. • Elizabethan Settlement: Compromise between Catholics and Protestants so everyone can be at peace. • Conflict with Philip II  Spanish Armada (1588)
