Hunger: The Demand • US Conference of Mayors surveys indicated an increased demand for food • Elderly requests for emergency food grew as did requests from families with children • Although employed, adults still sought emergency food aid Requests from People w/Children
Overview • Purpose to create a greater sense of community by providing food security for seniors in ventures that: • builds a sense of community among senior residents • enables them to maintain their independence • affords them opportunities to participate in social, educational and recreational activities • improves their quality of life through hot, nutritionally-balanced noon meals served in a congregate setting
Food SecurityComprehensive Nutrition Project (CNP) P/1,000 • The City of San Antonio is the single largest provider of congregate meals to seniors in the State of Texas • In Fiscal Year 2004, approximately 918,000 congregate and home delivered meals were served to seniors • Over the past four years, CNP has served over 3.6 million senior meals
Senior InitiativesProject HOPE • Partnership between Department of Community Initiatives and the San Antonio Food Bank • Enhances food security by providing up to 25 lbs of non-perishable food items twice per month • Increases senior access to nutritious and healthy food products • Food Stamp outreach to eligible seniors provides additional food resources
Food SecurityProject HOPE • In FY 2005, over 6,600 seniors have received supplemental food resources contributing to overall food security and good health • Over the past 2 ½ years, Project HOPE has distributed over 1,529 tons of food to seniors
Senior InitiativesProject HOPEReturn on Investment • City investment of $285K generated an estimated $5.7 million in food security for seniors • An additional 2,371 seniors received supplemental food, a growth of 55% • Food distribution to seniors increased by over 2,000 tons • 300 seniors were certified to receive Food Stamps with an average monthly benefit of $80, at an annual value of $288,000
