  1. Numbers In Color Artist Name: Jasper John Media: Encaustic Newspaper on canvas

  2. Description • The title of this painting practically tells what the artwork is “Numbers In Color” • The only clear subject I can recognize are the numbers that go from 0-9 like on a calculator • As for the elements of design the artwork does ok, the lines on the painting aren't very noticeable because of how they blend into the artwork. The shapes are only in geometric form and are mainly rectangles. Warm and cool colors are scattered across the canvas, Value is balanced between darks and lights. • Jasper Johns main technique was fusing in colors with heat and wax

  3. Analysis • In the painting there is neither a dominant element or an actual focal point because the painting has nothing to catch your eye at first glance or anything that stands out • The mood that this artwork shows is happy, because the artist put in a variety of colors and numbers almost representing a fantasy • In “Numbers in Color” the proportion size looks ideal, because all the shapes, which are mainly rectangles, seem to be all the same size • Japer John did put some patterns that can be pointed out such as the numbers that are organized in a irregular pattern because they are placed in different positions in every row • When you look at the painting your eyes tend to follow the colors, instead of going through row by row, it either follows the cool colors path or the warm colors path • The most important elements that built and made what the painting is today is the mood, variety of colors, numbers, and shapes if it want for these the painting wouldn’t be as interesting or as beautiful as it is now

  4. Interpretation • I believe the painting symbolizes simplicity with the numbers and the variety of colors explicit imagination in variety • The feeling being given off the painting can only be explained as a very wild dream that someone is having • The artwork reminds a lot about math because of the numbers 0-9 because its on my calculator and then the colors make me think about art and drawing

  5. Judgement • So far the artwork for me is a complete success, because it made me feel very interested in it at first glance and further examination made me realize its more than an encaustic
