  3. WTO man! (What’s The Objective) • Some basics around planning a web presence • A little bit about design and content • Present a How-To using Google platforms Disclaimer Not just one way to approach this but for the sake of this presentation, let’s pretend there is.

  4. Who’s in the room? • Who doesn’t have a website but was either told to build one or is in a new position where it is now part of your job description? • Of this group, who is confident you know what you are doing? • The rest of you that have a website… • Who is happy with your site?

(good question) • Developing a plan starts with thoughtful dialogue • don’t be afraid to ask the obvious • WHAT? • what are we looking to accomplish / improve / enhance • WHY? • is this necessary & critical to our operations • will this improve / enhance operations • WHO? • everyone, really • who are you not reaching that you want to • HOW? • is the web the right tool for delivery or is there another tool better for this endeavor

Some guidelines… content design • a picture is worth a 1000 words • Sets up Navigation • less is more…enough said • Start with pencil and paper • My general rules • 3 colors max • Text heavy areas • Darker text / lighterbackground • Left align • Embrace the -negative space • K.I.S.S. keep it simple silly

CONTENT (example 1) The Colorado Parent & Child Foundation was founded in 1991 by a team of volunteers dedicated to the vision that parents are their child's first and most influential teachers who prepare their children for success in school and life. To achieve this vision, the Colorado Parent & Child Foundation promotes and supports high quality early childhood education programs and family initiatives which build parent involvement and school readiness. This is accomplished through our work with two evidence-based international early childhood home visitation models: Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) and Parents as Teachers (PAT). HIPPY and PAT programs offer home-based, parent involved, early learning opportunities and provide solutions that strengthen families and help children realize success by beginning school ready to learn. Programs are implemented by partnering agencies throughout the state. Short term outcomes show: • Better birth outcomes • Enhanced parent-child interactions • Greater understanding of child development • Higher rate of immunization • Early detection of delays/Fewer unremediated delays • Stronger development of early literacy skills • Increased social competence • Improved positive parenting practices • Greater parent involvement in learning Longer term outcomes show: • Reduction in the frequency and severity of child maltreatment • Stronger school performance • Fewer behavioral problems • Higher rates of high school graduation

Google Platforms • Bloggerwww.blogger.com • Main website / blog site • Docs docs.google.com • Basic data collection using forms and spreadsheets • Store documents – Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF’s • Picasa Web Albums picasaweb.google.com • Picture storage and editing • Connects easily with blogger to insert images • Sitessites.google.com • Also a good place to build a website. It’s a matter of preference • Can also set up a resource site where documents are stored

  17. Why Google? • Content Management • Ease of use for individuals without web design/development experience • Free • Google platforms integrate well with each other • Can be customized • Other options for web development • Word Press – similar to blogger • Drupal – geared toward developers

  18. Setting up Blogger • Go to www.blogger.com • Create an account • Can use any email address you want to create your account. • Account applies to all Google platforms • If more than one person will be accessing the site, use a general business email account or make a new email account

  22. Blogger:Templates We can further customize / change templates after initially setting up the blog. But let’s set it up with the Simple template first.

  23. Start blogging or explore other options. Notice how you can point a domain name to this blogger site.

  25. Let’s setup the pages • Navigation • About Us • Results • Trainings • Support Us • Contact us • Photo Gallery • News / Events • Based on navigation • Blogger allows for 20 standalone pages • In the dashboard, select Edit Posts • Then select Edit Pages> New Page
