2014 Colorado Space Grant Annual Meeting

Join the 2014 Colorado Space Grant Annual Meeting at Community College of Aurora, led by Victor Andersen, faculty in the science department. With the goal of increasing student participation without overwhelming personnel, a version of "Gateway to Space" called EGG 151 - Introduction to Experimental Design (2 credits) was taught. Scholarships were provided to eligible students, resulting in successful outcomes and diverse demographics. The course grant also includes engineering workshops and required coaching and advising.

  3. Goal • Increase number students participating • Avoid personneloverload • Find and engage all students who are capable and interested

  4. Solution • Teach version of “Gateway to Space” • EGG 151---Introduction to Experimental Design (2 credits) • $500 scholarships for all eligible students

  5. Second Iteration, Spring 2014 • 12 students (9scholarship eligible) • 3 local faculty (Tom Dillon, Martha Jackson-Carter, myself) • Guest lecturers

  6. EGG 151 Outcomes • Flew Spring 2014 Demosat • 1biology, 1 engineering (Solar Panels), 1 chemistry, 1 Instrumentation • All teams presented papers at Student Research Symposium

  7. Demographics • Female 2/11 (18%) • Under Represented Minorities 4/11 (36%)

  8. COURSE Grant • Target students at beginning of college career • Scholarships for eligible students • 2 intro to engineering workshops • Required coaching and advising
