  4. Belfort was a little village , belonging to the counts of Montbeliard.

  5. In 1307, Renaud de Bourgogne, count of Montbeliardneededsome money to start a waragainsthisbrother. Richinhabitants of Belfort gave him money . In compensation, Renaud gave them a charter : Belfort became a free town.

  6. Fromthisperiod, remains a nicefountain and the ruins of Renaud brother’scastle ( a tower, symbol of Belfort).

  7. Belfort becomes French

  8. In June 1636, French troops, alliedwith a Swedisharmy, attack Belfort and ruin all the villages around the city. Belfort isnowattached to Alsace. Louis XIV, décides to fortify Belfort whichis no longer a free town but a French city very close to the border with the Germanterritories.

  9. Vauban , fieldmarshal and militaryarchitect came to Belfort to supervise the construction work. He doubles the city area (mostlywithbarracks).

  12. Twogateswere made in the city wall. They are decoratedwith the lillyflowers, a symbol of France . The town in the XVIII centurywasmuch taller . It attracted shops, business and schools for Alsacian people wanting to learn French. (In Belfort French has always been spoken).

  14. In 1870, France and Prussia goto war. Veryquickly, itturnsinto a disaster for the French.

  15. Belfort isbesieged and bombarded for 103 days. But, itis the onlytown in France, like Paris, whichwon’tsurrender. Germany willannex Alsace but Belfort wilbedetachedfrom Alsace and remain French.

  16. In celebration of the resistance , A. Bartholdi sculpts a huge lion under the castle.

  17. Important Alsacian industries settle in Belfort, after not becomingGerman. For instance Alstromwichmakesengines (nowadays Eurostar and TGV). There are now more and more soldiers. The population has gone from 40,000 inhabitants in 1872 to 50 000 today.
