What Is Title I? • As a component of the No Child Left Behind law, Title I is a federally funded grant program designed to support low-achieving children in high poverty public schools, select children in private schools, and any homeless child in Anne Arundel County. • Its purpose is to provide additional opportunities and resources for students, teachers, and parents, to ensure that ALL children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain high-quality educationand reach at least proficiency on the State’s academic achievement standards and assessments. • Funds are used to support additional academic services, materials, and personnel, professional development and parentinvolvement opportunities.

  3. What Is Title I? (cont.) • The Title I program will provide your child with extra educational assistance beyond the regular classroom. In most cases these additional services will include all or some of the following services: • Smaller classes or special instructional spaces. • Additional teachers and aides. • Opportunities for professional development for school staff. • Extra time for teaching Title I students the skills they need. • A variety of supplementary teaching methods. • An individualized program for students. • Additional teaching materials which supplement their regular instruction.

  4. How Are Schools Selected? • Schools are selected based on the percentage of students who qualify for free meals (not actually receive but qualify). This data is used for many grants to distribute funds. • At least 46% of the students attending the school are eligible for free meals. This percentage can and does change annually based on funding amount. • Of the 77 elementary schools in Anne Arundel County, this year there are 16 public schools who are fortunate enough to receive fund and 2 private schools.

  5. There are Two Types of Title I Schools…. School-wide Schools AND Targeted Assistance Schools

  6. School-wide Schools… • These elementary schools have the largest percentages of students eligible for free meals. • Funds are used to support the entire school program. • Funds should be used to support the instructional needs for the children most at risk of not meeting State standards.

Targeted Assistance Schools… • These schools have fewer students eligible for free meals • A small group of students in one or more grade levels are identified for intervention based on educational needs. • Funds used only for programs that provide instructional services to eligible children identified as having the greatest need for assistance, their teachers and parents.

Germantown’s Parent / Family / Community Involvement Policy Germantown Elementary School faculty and staff believe it is paramount that we build relationships with all stakeholders in order to ensure that all students are successful. We actively seek community involvement from a variety of stakeholders to provide input to the learning process at Germantown. We capitalize on this by using available resources to provide events which educate community members on various aspects of our school culture. Through this joint cooperative effort, the families of Germantown are truly the beneficiaries.

  12. Our Home/School Compact • Rights and responsibilities of students, parents, and staff to support achievement for all. • How would the Home School Compact better reflect your family? Please let us know. • The compact will be distributed Wednesday, September 15, 2010. • Discuss the importance of the compact as a family over dinner and review the responsibilities frequently. • As a school, the compact will be revisited during parent phone calls/conferences, with the students through the morning announcements, and handed out again in January

How are Title I Parent Involvement Funds Spent At Our School? • Parents are their children’s first and most important teachers. • Parent involvement opportunities at our school… • Donuts, Dads, Dice , & D.O.G.S. County Policyand Title I District-Level Plan • Purpose:To ensure a strong home-school-community partnership, and to promote and increase effective and comprehensive involvement practices. • Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Title I Office: • Recognizes that engaging parents in the education process is essential to improved academic success for all students and that a child’s education is a responsibility shared by the school and the family. • Works to eliminate barriers that impede family involvement and to create an environment supportive of family involvement programs. • Supports the development, implementation, and regular evaluation of parent involvement programs in each school and at the county level.
