  2. TARTU • the oldest town of Estonia • the first historic mention in 1030

  3. TARTU • is the second largest town of Estonia • is the centre of Southern Estonia • The Emajõgi River, which connects the two largest lakes of Estonia, flows through the town

  4. THE UNIVERSITY OF TARTU • The University of Tartu was founded in 1632 by the Swedish king Gustav Adolf II • Tartu is the intellectual capital of Estonia

  5. THE UNIVERSITY OF TARTU • Tartu is the town of young people and students • Roughly 20% of its 100,000 inhabitants are university students • Today there are 17,400 students from all over the world

  6. Student Life • There is a legend among students as how difficult it is to leave Tartu.

  7. Student life • During every semester there are a lot of student events: - international food festival; - international film nights; - sledging; - sauna days; - bog walking weekends; - and many more.

  8. The most popular event is Student Spring Days This is a tradition from 1960’s It is held during one week at the end of April and the beginning of May Tartu Student Spring Days

  9. Mascot of Student Days • Villem is a yellow dog and he is active, friendly and playful.

  10. Traditional events • Washing the head of a former professor Karl Ernst von Baer’s statue on Toome Hill with champagne on Devils’ Night (April 30)

  12. Day Club • The best place to meet your friends and schoolmates during the festival is the Pirogov Park.

  13. Quiz show • The quiz show is called “Mälukas” (black-out) • It is a fun quiz on students’ knowledge before the exams • The 3-membered teams challenge the colourful information which is stored in their grey braincells

  14. Nightly Song Festival • It takes place at Kassitoome Valley. • There is no conductor conducting the choir. • Organizers put the songs’ lyrics on the studentdays webpage, so everybody can print them out and arrange their own songbooks.

  17. Costume Relay Race • This is a chance to run around the Vabaduse Square in a crazy outfit

  18. Karsumm • Karsumm is an event for students who are keen on “flying” • Each participant has to build an aircraft and try to fly as far as possible
