  2. Introduction to community helpers A community is a place where people live, work, and play. We call it a neighborhood. Community helpers are people who help us in our neighborhood. They can help us by keeping us safe, making sure we are healthy, cooking food for us, or teaching us.   3. Your task... Your task is to learn about the different community helpers in our community. Pay attention to what they do, the tools they use, and how they help in our community. At the end of the turboquest you will pick your favorite community helper that you have learned about. You will then write a story and draw a picture about that community helper.

ELACCKW7: Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of books by a favorite author and express opinions about them). ELACCKW8: With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. MCCK.OA.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. MCCK.OA.2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem. MCCK.OA.3 Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).   9. What are Community Helpers? • Community Helpers are people that do jobs in order to help people. • What kind of community helper would you see if you were sick? • What type of community helper would you see that makes • sure your teeth are healthy and clean?

  12. Did you know a farmer is also a community helper? • Farmers grow crops and raise livestock for people to buy for food

  13. Livestock • Livestock are animals raised on the farm that are sold to make money • Think of the song “Old MacDonald had a Farm”. What animals do you think are on the farm?

  15. Crops • Crops are plants, like fruits and vegetables, that are sold to make money. • Can you think of something a farmer would grow?

  16. Farming Equipment Dairy Farm • Farmers use machines to plant and harvest, or pick, crops. • Some farmers also use machines to feed or milk animals. Potato harvester Combined harvester

  17. Farming is Hard Work • A farmer's work can be very hard. Hours are long, often sunrise to sunset. • During planting and harvesting seasons, farmers rarely have a day off. • The rest of the year, they sell their crops, fix machines, and plan for the next year.
