  1. Hello, Earthlings!

  2. The Solar System By: Katherine and Aditi

  3. Summary of Lesson

  4. The Planets • Planets are large bodies that revolve around the Sun. • We have inner planets and outer planets. • The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. • The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

  5. The Difference Between Inner Planets and Outer Planets Inner Planets Outer Planets Gaseous Farther from the Sun Relatively big Has lots of moons Farther apart Colder • Rocky • Closer to the Sun • Relatively Small • Has 0,1,or 2 moons • Close together • Warmer

  6. The Sun • The Sun is the very center of our solar system. • It is the object that heats up and gives energy to our planet. Over here, you can see the structure of The Sun

  7. NuclearFusion • Nuclear fusion is when hydrogen and hydrogen combine to make helium. • Then, a huge amount of energy is released in this process from the Sun.

  8. Asteroids, Comets, Meteors, and Meteoroids • A Asteroid is a relatively small, rocky object that orbits the Sun. • There are also asteroid belts. They are a group of asteroids that Orbits around the sun. • Comets are small, orbiting bodies made of dust, ice, and frozen gases. • Meteors are chunks of matter that enters Earth’s atmosphere and is heated by friction with the air. • Meteors begin as meteoroids that are bits of rock or metal that orbit the Sun. When the meteoroids enter Earth’s atmosphere, it is so fast, that the friction produced by rubbing against air particles make a red-hot glow and they are then called meteors.

  9. Beyond the Book

  10. Fun Facts about the Solar System • Did you know that the solar system was formed 4.6 billion years ago? • Your spine will stretch in space because with less gravitational force than on Earth, there is less pressure on your spine causing you to grow 2 inches taller! • There are more stars than all the grains of sand on Earth. • In space, astronauts can’t cry because there is no gravity, so the tears won’t flow.

  11. Fun Facts Continued • Sirius ( the Dog Star) is much brighter than the Sun. In Fact, no star is as bright as Sirius. • If you shouted in space, even if someone is right next to you, they wouldn’t be able to hear you as there is no air to carry your message. • It is impossible to snore while sleeping in the weightlessness of space.

  12. Thank You! Bye-bye!
