  2. What is Alcohol? • Definition- Ethyl Alcohol is an organic substance that is classified as a central nervous system depressant. • When consumed, it slows down body function including brain activity and muscle coordination.

  3. Is Alcohol a DRUG? Drugs are any chemical substance (besides a food) that alters the structure and function of a cell.

  4. Facts 1. About 20% of the alcohol is absorbed in the stomach and 80% in the small intestine. 2. Your BAC (blood alcohol concentration) can rise up to 20 minutes after having a drink. 3. After alcohol is absorbed it leaves the body in three ways: the kidneys, lungs, and liver.

  5. Physical Effects on the BODY • Blurred Vision • Slurred Speech • Slowed Reaction Time • Difficulty Walking • Slowed Breathing

Disease • Cirrhosis- Is essentially a scarring of the liver. • Pancreatitis- An inflammation of the pancreas. • Hypertension- Too much blood being forced through the arteries. • Osteoporosis- The thinning of the bones. • Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome- Combination of a vitamin deficiency and a change in the brain.
