  3. Registration • Online Registration Process • Open NOW! • REGISTRATION CLOSES APRIL 10th! Your registration package should include: • Course Catalog • Transcript • Course Registration Worksheet • IB and/or ROP Information Keep in Mind: • Schedules must include between 12 and 15 trimester courses (or 10 for 12th grade) • Registration is: students selecting course requests. Actual schedules are not created until this summer and elective courses cannot be guaranteed. • Request a variety of alternatives! • There is no priority given based on when course requests are submitted between now and April 10th. • Submitted course requests can be edited until April 10th.

Social Science (3.5 years) 1 trimester Social Science 1 year World History 10 A/B 1 year US History 11 A/B 1 trimester Civics/1 trimester Economics English (4 years) 1 year English 9 A/B 1 year English 10 A/B 1 year English 11 A/B 1 year of English for Seniors Mathematics (2 years) *Must include completion of Algebra 1 Elective Courses= 70 Credits Science (2 years) 1 year of Biology 1 year of a Physical Science Foreign Language, Visual/Performing Arts, Career Tech Ed (3 years in 2/3 categories) 1 year of a Foreign Language AND/OR 1 year of Visual/Performing Art AND/OR 1 year of Career/Technical Education Physical Education (2 years) 2 Trimesters of PE 1 A/B 2 Trimesters of PE 2 A/B and/or Sports Exemption Health1 trimester

GHS Graduation Requirements How to earn 240 credits: 5 credits are earned for each course passed 60% or a D- is required to pass the class 70% or a C- is required to meet minimum college entrance requirements and to meet prerequisites for higher level classes 12 courses per year (4 per trimester) will keep a student on track for graduation: • 60 credits x 4 years = 12 courses/year = 240 credits • The trimester system gives our students an opportunity to take more classes • Use Overgrad’s 4 year planner to track completion of required courses and electives • Overgrad.com

  7. Credit Check! By the end of T3 students should have…. 9th graders: 60-75 credits 10th graders: 120-150 credits 11th graders: 180-225

  8. Credit Recovery Talk to your counselor about credit recovery options and which works best for you. Summer school • available for math, social science, and english • free • runs June 17th-July 12th • applications available in the counseling office • can take up to two courses per summer in english and social science, or one math class • 10th/11th get priority Academic Prep • available as a class in the student’s schedule during the school year • can be added by the student’s counselor upon request • available for any course not passed, except for foreign language and electives Online classes • BYU, NUVHS, or Apex Virtual are the recommended programs available to GHS students • Must be UC/CSU approved • fee to register for class • available for any course not passed

Course Selection Social Science (2 Trimesters) 10th • World History A/B • Honors World History A/B • AP European History A/B (Seminar for AP Euro is strongly recommended!) 11th • US History • AP US History (Seminar for APUSH is strongly recommended!) • IB History of the Americas 1A/B/C (2 year program, 6 trimesters. This course continues into senior year) 12th • Economics and Civics or AP Government (no seminar available) • IB History of the Americas 2A/B/Economics (continuation from 11th grade)

  10. Math(2 or 3 trimesters) GHS Grad requirement: • 20 credits; Completion of Algebra 1 A/B is required. College requirement: • 3 years is required and 4 is recommended Students should take Math every year! Which math class should you take next? Ask your current math teacher for a recommendation Must end the course with a C- or higher to move onto the next level 2 vs. 3 trimester math options - what’s right for you?

English(2 Trimesters) 10th: English 10A/10B Honors English 10A/10B 11th: English 11 A/B AP Language and Composition AP Literature and Composition IB Language and Literature (IB is a 4 trimester long course which will continue into 12th grade and meet graduation requirements for 11th and 12th grade english) Consider taking an Honors, AP, or IB classes if: • You have a high interest in English • Do you love to read? Are you a strong writer? • You are ready to challenge yourself with a more rigorous schedule • You have done well in English? • Not sure? Ask your current Teacher of the subject you are interested in 12th: • Senior English electives: Short Story, Shakespeare, Satire, Mythology, Fantasy & Science Fiction, English 12A, English 12B • AP Language and Composition • AP Literature and Composition • IB Language and Literature (continuation from 11th grade)

  13. Science Course Selection Two years of Science required: Life and Physical. Three is recommended for college admissions! Life Science:Biology is 1st life science class Recommended to be taken in 10th grade Freshmen who have completed Biology should take: Physical Science consider Biotechnology (must have completed algebra 1 and Bio with Cs or higher) Physical Sciences Conceptual Physics No prerequisites Chemistry ’C’ or better in algebra 1 Physics must have completed geometry Astronomy must have completed geometry All GHS Science Courses are Lab Science and A-G approved!

AP Environmental AP Biology AP Chemistry AP Physics Mechanics IB Biology IB Chemistry IB Physics Marine Biology Field Biology Biotechnology Physiology Biochemistry AP and IB courses are available for 11th and 12th grade students only Be sure to check the course catalogue for any recommended seminars that accompany the AP classes!

  15. Sophomore ONLY Course Selection Physical Education (2 trimesters) P.E. 2A 2B Students must pass the State PE fitness exam. If not, they will continue taking two-trimesters of PE each year until the exam is passed Students participating in CIF Interscholastic Sports may be exempt from 1 trimester of sophomore PE per sport if they meet exemption requirements. Those requirements include all of the following: • Have satisfactorily passed the PE fitness exam. • Completed PE 1 A/B with a grade of “B” or better. • Have an overall GPA 2.0 or higher in the previous 3 trimesters. • Enrolled as a full-time student • Must submit a completed contract within 2 weeks of the start of the sport. Talk to your counselor or Mr. Moore for more information.

World Languages (P) High School Requirement: 3 years total (6 trimesters) of classes in Foreign Language and/or CTE and/or VPA College Requirement: 2 years of the same foreign language, three recommended FrenchSpanishSpan. for Native SpeakersASL French 1 Spanish 1 SNS 1 ASL 1 French 2 Spanish 2 SNS 2 ASL 2 French 3 Spanish 3 AP Spanish or IB Spanish ASL 3 IB French Spanish 4 AP Spanish IB Spanish SL/HL Foreign language level placements are based on: • previously earned grades • teacher recommendations Students must earn a C- or higher at the end of the B portion of their class to move onto the next level. do not take a gap year in your foreign language sequence. Talk to your counselor if you do not see the next level of your language in your schedule

Visual & Performing Arts (VPA) (P)(1, 2 or 3 trimesters) High School Requirement: 3 years total (6 trimesters) of classes in VPA and/or Foreign Language and/or CTE College Requirement: 1 year (level 1 and 2) of the same art form. These two classes can be taken in different school years. Art, Ceramics, Digital Photo, Animation, Drama, Choir, Symphony Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Video Production, StudioBroadcast* *meets HS grad VPA only, not a VPA course for UC/CSU Advanced VPA Courses AP Digital Photo AP Art IB Theater Arts IB Visual Arts

CTE Opportunities High School Requirement: 3 years total (6 trimesters) of classes in CTE and/or Foreign Language and/or VPA Career & Technical Education (CTE)(1 or 2 trimesters) • Intro to Engineering and Design, Principles of Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture, Robotics 1/2, Auto Tech 1/2, Machine Tool 1/2, Foods 1/2 Computer Science (also CTE) • Intro to Computer Science, Exploring Computer Science A/B, Intro to Computer Programming, Computer Applications, Game Design 1 A/B, Principles of Computer Science A/B, Computer Graphics 1/2,AP Computer Science Other Electives: • Journalism, Leadership, Yearbook, Intro to Business, Psychology (regular and IB) and MANY MORE! ROP: Careers By Choice, Not By Chance Granada ROP Courses Available to 11th -12th grade students • Medical Occupations Also Available to 10th grade students • Sports Medicine/ Athletic Trainer • Integrated Marketing Communications • Economics of Business Ownership • Developmental Psychology of Children Off Site ROP Courses courses offered at Dublin, Livermore, Foothill or Amador High Schools Available to 11th and 12th grade students Animation & Motion Graphics Video Game Art & Design Visual Communications Criminal Justice (CJ/CSI) Auto Body Repair Automotive Technology Emergency Medical Responder Intro to Health Careers Criminal Justice Academy - 12 credits at Las Positas IT Essentials • First course in the Cisco CCNA Networking Certification and A+ Industry Certification Internet Engineering I • Second course in the Cisco CCNA Networking Certification and A+ Industry Certification FYI Med Occs and Nursing have an additional application CJ Academy requires an additional interview ROP classes are A-G approved and students can receive college credit for them

Seniors and College Readiness Take at least 4 academic courses UC asks for senior year to be similar in rigor to past years Las Positas students should take a challenging course load including math! Standardized Tests • SAT: May, June, Aug, Oct., Nov., Dec. • ACT: April, June, July, Sept, Oct, Dec *last available test date for applicants is December of 12th grade Eligibility is based on… • GPA • TEST SCORES • A-G courses • Personal Statements • Extracurricular • Letters of Recommendation

Important Dates and Resources April 10th - Online Registration Closes March 18th-June 4th - Counselors meet individually with every current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade student to advise on classes for next year. Edits can be made during these meetings. April 24th - College Planning Night. Still have questions or need assistance… If you find you need help with choosing classes or the online registration process, start by accessing the online information under the online course registration. Counselors cannot meet with you BEFORE registration, however they will be meeting with each one of you individually by the end of the year to go over your course choices and make sure you have everything you need.

Take time to look through the GHS Course Catalog Complete 4-year plan on backpage • check off the requirements you have completed for GHS graduation • 4-year college bound – check off A-G requirements you have completed Complete Course Request Worksheet-CHOOSE WISELY • Do you have at least 12 5-unit courses but no more than 15 5-unit courses? • Do you have 5 alternate elective courses Follow tutorial for online registration!!
