The Importance of a Healthy Mind for a Healthy Body

Eating our ‘five a day’ is something that is drummed into us from childhood, and most of us are familiar with the premise that eating at least five pieces of fruit or vegetable every day, helps to keep us in good shape. While the exact number of fruits and vegetables we should consume daily may be difficult to prove scientifically, it cannot be disputed that eating healthily helps to minimise our trips to the doctor.

  1. The Importance of a Healthy Mind for a Healthy Body

  2. But what about keeping a healthy mind? Is that as important, and if so, how do we achieve this?

  3. Eating healthily to think healthily: The Mental Health Foundation suggests that a good diet is vital for our mental health, and that diet can play a significant role in the development, management and prevention, of many conditions, such as Schizophrenia, depression, ADHD and Alzheimer’s disease. A healthy and balanced diet may not necessarily be able to control these conditions, or cure them, but managing them may well be made easier. Consuming a good balance of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals, is giving your mind the best chance to be healthy, and the rest is up to you.

  4. An active mind: Brain degeneration is a hot potato in the medical and scientific world, and there have been many discussions and scientific experiments conducted to try and see if it’s at all possible to overcome conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia. Research is ongoing, and the results are inconclusive, but there are other reasons to try and keep your mind active. As our minds are shaped by everything that we see, hear, feel and think, we can choose what we feed into our mind, in the same way that we choose what to feed our stomachs.

  5. Choosing what your mind consumes is sometimes referred to as a ‘mind diet’, and certain diets can help to keep your mind healthy and avoid negative thoughts and feelings, that often have an impact on our physical health, too. There are some questions that we should ask ourselves regularly, to establish just how healthy our minds are keeping, and some of these include the following: • Is my mind diet good enough? Am I balancing my thoughts or are they tending towards negativity? Do I need to focus more on what I feed my mind?

  6. Can I distinguish between feeding ‘junk’ food to my mind, and feeding it healthy food? • Is my mind and the way I think about things, having a negative effect on me as a person? This may be a good time to speak to friends and family members that you trust, and ask them if your behaviour and reactions appear balanced to them. Maintaining your mental health: There are many things we can do ourselves to help prevent our minds from becoming sick though, just as there are best practices for maintaining a healthy mind, such as the points mentioned above.

  7. Eating healthily, taking regular physical exercise and mental exercise, are all simple things that we can all do to stay in good shape mentally and physically. Many of us suffer from poor physical health at some point in our lives, and the same can probably be said for poor mental health, too. Consulting a doctor when you are physically sick or injured is automatic, but we are often not so quick to seek medical help if we feel that our minds are suffering in some way. But, we should be.
