Pregame Responsibilities • Referee • Visit team dressing rooms to provide each head coach with a list of officials, discuss special situation and verbally verify in the presence of the umpire that the players are legally equipped • Conduct the pregame official conference • Approve the clock operator and review timing procedures • Conduct pregame toss and introduce team captions to each other

  4. Linesman • Secure stakes, chain and down markers • With the line-to-gain, review do’s and don’ts .. i.e. moving the chains and down marker / acting in a partisan manner / measuring for first down

  5. Umpire • Accompany referee to locker room to check player equipment

  6. Line Judge • Check proper working order of the clock and have an auxiliary timing device available • Assist in starting the game on time • Orient the ball boys

  7. Important Routine Procedures • Starting and Stopping the clock • Measurement for 1st down • Relocating the ball and the chain • Administering Penalties

  8. Referee • Is responsible for fouls committed by or against a passer and against a punter • Rules on illegal passes and watches for illegal blocks behind the scrimmage line • Shares responsibility for any illegal motion other then when an offensive back is in lateral motion, which is the resp. of the flank official • Trails the ball carrier on running plays and frequently whistles the ball dead • Can assist in spotting the ball • Executes the “ready for play” signal • Starts game clock and play clock

  9. Umpire • Chief resp. is looking for fouls by interior linesman • Shares calling resp. on encroachment and false starts • Follow the ball on running plays and look for fouls adjacent to the ball carrier • On passing places his primary resp. is looking for ineligible receivers downfield

  10. Linesman • Encroachments or false starts • Considered and flank official he helps determine forward progress • Checks for illegal contact out of bounds • Observes contact between pass receivers and defensive backs • Maintains close contact with line-to-gain crew

  11. Line Judge • Basically same as Linesman • Primary coverage of the goal line and end line
