  1. Objectives: • Today we will… • Debrief Osmosis & Diffusion Lab • Whiteboard practice • Q&A Time • Friday Quiz! • So that we can… • Define Hypertonic, Hypotonic, Isotonic • Predict how water and other substances will flow across the cell membrane

  2. Bell Work: • Please take out your Osmosis & Diffusion Lab from last class. • Turn in Yeast Lab take home quiz. • Log onto your IC, and see what assignments are labeled as I or M. • Make a note in your planner of what you need to complete and turn in before the end of unit. • P5 be sure to grab Unit 2 review and Quiz Prep HW that Mrs. Gates forgot to get you on Wednesday.

  3. End of Unit Reminders: • Unit Test for Unit 2: The Building Blocks of Life is next week on block day (Wed 10/3 or Thurs 10/4.) Remember, this is our final opportunity to assess on Unit 2 topics, so be prepared to show your best work! • Friday 10/5 is the last day to turn in any missing/revised work from Unit 2. After this date, any “M’s” or “I’s” turn into zeros.

  4. Osmosis & Diffusion Lab Debrief: Discuss with your partner: What is the name of each molecule? How are their differences in STRUCTURE important for this lab? C A B D

  5. Lab Debrief: Which of these substances diffused across the artificial membrane used in yesterday’s lab? C A B D

  6. Lab Debrief: Discuss: How were each of these ideas demonstrated in yesterday’s lab? • Selectively Permeable Membrane • Diffusion • Osmosis • Dynamic Equilibrium

  7. Whiteboard Practice:

  8. Practice: You have a cell, with a 1% concentration of salt in it. You put it into a solution with a 10% concentration of salt. Please draw a diagram showing what osmosis and diffusion you would expect to occur.

  9. Practice: You have a cell, with a 5% concentration of carbon dioxide in it. You put it into a solution with a 3% concentration of carbon dioxide. Please draw a diagram showing what osmosis & diffusion you expect to occur. Is this solution hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic?

  10. Review: Why are diffusion & osmosis important for cells?

  11. Practice: You have a cell, with a 0.5% calcium concentration. You put it into a solution of 0.3% calcium. • Please draw a diagram to show how osmosis & diffusion would occur. • Describe the solution as hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic. • What do you expect to see happen to the cell?

  12. Practice: • You place a cell that • contains no glucose in • a solution of 5% glucose. • Please draw a diagram to show how osmosis & diffusion would occur. • Describe the solution as hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic. • What do you expect to see happen to the cell?

  13. Practice: • You place a cell that • Contains 3% starch • a solution containing no starch. • Please draw a diagram to show how osmosis & diffusion would occur. • Describe the solution as hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic. • What do you expect to see happen to the cell?

  14. Review: Identify the type of cell shown here.

  18. Review: Identify the organelle shown here:

  19. Review: List 2 organelles involved in capturing and releasing energy to power cell processes.

  20. Review: List 2 organelles that are found in ALL cells.

  21. Review: List 4 organelles involved in packaging & storing materials.

  22. Review: List 2 organelles involved in making and moving proteins.

  23. Review: List 3 organelles involved in providing structure and support for the cell.

  24. Review: List the organelle that is most responsible for selecting what enters and leaves the cell.

  25. Review: Which 2 organelles have their OWN DNA?

  26. Homework #4: Endosymbiosis = 2 or more prokaryotes combine to work together as 1 cell

  27. Q&A Time:

  28. Quiz!

  29. Homework: • Osmosis & Diffusion Lab Typed Conclusion DUE for peer editing due MONDAY. • Final Drafts of O & D Lab packet and Conclusion DUE TUESDAY. • Use your Study Guide to start preparing for the Unit 2 Test!
