  2. Paper Definition: Paper is made when natural substances called cellulose are pressed to form a sheet. Use: Paper is used to for writing, drawing, or recording information. History: Forms of paper were used by many civilizations through the years and is still around today. Change: Paper has had many advances including material, color, thickness etc.

  3. EVOLUTION • 3000 B.C. - Tapa in Egypt • 100 B.C. - Cloth paper in China • 105 A.D. - Fiber paper documented by Chinese • 1774 A.D. - Recycled Paper • 1789 A.D. - First Bleached Paper • 1829 A.D. - Tinted and Embossed paper • 1838 A.D. - Wood pulp used

  4. Tapa • Made of natural materials such as Berries, Bark, and Papyrus. • Used extensively by Ancient Civilizations in roughly 3,000 B.C. • Still used today by some countries. Papyrus Bark

  5. Cloth • Cloth fibers were used especially by the Romans and other similar civilizations. • Chinese used it as paper in 100 B.C. • Textile fibers were also used in the making of tapa and advanced Chinese paper. Textile Artwork

  6. Chinese progress • Ts’aiLun documented a new way to make paper in 105 A.D. • Made from bark and hemp.

  7. Tinting and Embossing • Thomas Cobb patented methods of dyeing and embossing paper during the process of making it in 1829. • This is the first patented method of paper coloring through dye.

  8. Wood pulp • 1838 Charles Fenerty created the first paper made completely from wood. However, he didn’t patent it. • This is the method used today.

  9. Paper today Today most paper is made out of wood pulp or shavings with exceptions when it comes to stationary and money. Most paper can be recycled and remade.

  10. Changes in paper • Because paper is recyclable and comes from a natural resource, it has little affect on the environment. • It is an amazing addition to our society because it allows us to be creative through art and productive by writing and reading. • Paper is becoming more and more unnecessary with all of the new technology, but without it our society would not be nearly as advanced as it is today.
