  6. The Case for Energy Awareness • Energy waste can be controlled by training people to modify their day-to-day practices • Energy waste happens in areas that each of us can control: Typical Office Building Electrical Use 23% Use Less. Gain More.

  7. Where We Can Improve • A subcommittee of the Energy Management Work Group surveyed 10 buildings, from Fire HQ and City Hall Annex to DPW Ryan Building and Central Square Library • Looking for simple-to-address opportunities of energy waste, not city-wide “big picture” issues that are out of the hands of individual employees • Findings: Employees do a great job of cutting energy use in some areas, but need a little education to improve in other areas Use Less. Gain More.

  8. What We Found • 53% of computers were left ON after hours • 46% of all computer monitors were ON • 92% of those on had active screen savers • Lights left on after-hours in: • Common areas • Hallways • Stairwells • Restrooms • Kitchen areas • Offices Use Less. Gain More.

  9. How Cambridge GreenSense Works • Four Energy Tips - one per quarter - in the areas we can have the most impact on • Educational materials — energy guides, posters, online information — will educate employees about cutting energy waste • Address both the environmental and financial impact of cutting waste • The first Energy Tip will tackle lights left on in unoccupied spaces and after hours Use Less. Gain More.

  10. What Gets Measured Gets Done • Results of the program will be tracked, measured, and presented to all facilities • We’re establishing baselines for each building’s energy usage and waste production • Each quarter we’ll analyze the results by measuring energy bills for changes in usage (not $) • Present results, recognize achievement at top facilities, and encourage greater participation where there is no change Use Less. Gain More.

  11. Timetable • Cambridge GreenSense logo and graphic materials in process • Selection of four energy tips will be completed by January 1 • First energy tip distributed in February 2008 • Employee feedback requested and welcome — let us know where you think employees can have the greatest impact on energy efficiency Use Less.
