What is Culture? • An environment that grows something! • What is Christian culture supposed to grow? • Holiness: “You shall be holy, for I am holy” 1 Peter 1:16. • Purity: “He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds” Titus 2:14. • Christlikeness: “A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” Matthew 5:14. • Premkumar D. Williams, Between City and Steeple: “Once upon a time, the Christian concern for truth, goodness, and beauty was actually embraced and embodied in culture. It can be done because it has been done. Christian culture is ‘the Gospel in bodily form’, and the medieval period is the closest humanity has come to realizing its promise”

  7. Only Two Cultures . . . • James 4:3: “You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” • 1 John 5:19: “The whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” • Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” -------------------- • John 17:15-17: “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one . . . sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.”

Cultural Attack • History: “oppression is Christianity’s fault.” • Religion: “It is Christ’s fault.” • Politics/economics: “white, Christian male’s fault.” • Family: “banning gay marriage - Bible’s fault.” • Education: “homeschooling is brainwashing>’ • Women: “women @ home: Christian oppression.” • Race: “white, Christian male’s fault.” • Human rights: “pro-life = Christian fanaticism.” • Church: “they are biased, bigoted and unfair.”

  10. What Does the Bible say to do? • Option A: join the cloister/convent. • Option B: join the culture. • Option C: develop an informed, unified, strong, biblical, bold counter-culture. • Option D: Sit and cry.

Acts 2:41-47 • “So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. • They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. • Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. • And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; • and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. • Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, • praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
