  3. Offside Duties Scenario #1 A ball is played into open space by an attacker A2. Another attacker A6, who was in an offside position when the ball was played by A2 moves to play the ball. Question #1 As the AR, do you wait until the attacker A6 moving to the ball touches the ball before you raise the flag for offside? YESNO WHY? Player has not yet interfered with play or opponent

  4. Offside I. Interfering with play means…. “touching” the ball last played or touched by a teammate. HOWEVER….“Touching the ball” is notrequired for calling offside, if the attacker is directly “Interfering with an Opponent”.

  5. Offside II. Interfering with an opponent means…. Blocking the movement or vision of an opponent OR Challenging an opponent for the ball, which is the act of moving toward the ball and causing the defender to react or move.

  6. Scenario #2 The ball has been kicked deep into the attacking side of the field by A4 and a defender (D8) lunges at the ball and deflects it away. The only player (A7) now near the ball was standing in an offside positionwhen A4 kicked the ball. A7 then sprints towards the ball, but the offside offense is not signaled by the AR. Question #2 Is this a correct decision? YES NO WHY? Player has not yet gained an advantage Offside Duties

  7. Offside III. Gaining an Advantage means…. playing (touching) a ball that… rebounds off the goal post or crossbar … OR … is deflected to him off an opponent

  12. Scenario #5 An attacking player (A2) in the offside position continues to sprint towards the ball. The nearest defender (D3) then also starts to sprint to the ball and is able to kick the ball over the goal-line and out of play just before the attacking player (A2) reaches the ball. Question #5 Should the AR signal for the offside offense? YES NO WHY? A2 is directly interfering with D3, forcing D3 to kick the ball out-of-play Offside Duties

  14. Referees and Assistant Referees Do not signal for offside unless you see: a touch on the ball or clear interference with an opponent (directly blocking the movement or vision of an opponent or movement causing defender to move)
