  1. Balanced and Unbalanced Forces When the forces acting on the car are balanced, the resultant force is zero. It stops accelerating and moves at a constant speed. When the force produced by the engine is transferred to the rear wheels (via the transmission system) the forces on the car are unbalanced and it accelerates. Drag forces, due to friction and air resistance, act in the opposite direction. When the brakes are applied, the drag force increases and the car decelerates. The resultantforce decreases and the acceleration decreases. 120 110 140 100 100 120 mph 160 80 130 rpm x100 80 180 60 40 200 60 140 20 220 0 40 150 5 6 2 3 7 1 4 20 160 Neutral 0 Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Silverstone Drag Force (Thrust) Forward Force Visit www.worldofteaching.com For 100’s of free powerpoints Resultant Force Resultant Force
