Concerns of the community college student • Will I fit in? • Can I afford the school I want to attend? • Will I pass my courses? • Will my credits transfer? • Will I make friends? • Should I live on campus or commute? • What will happen to my GPA? • Should I attend a large, small or medium size school? • Should I get involved in student activities?

  4. Goals • Help students to feel a part of the community college • Provide accurate information to help students make informed decisions • Instruct students on the mechanics of transfer • Help students to deal with the social aspects of transfer

  5. Sequence of events leading up to attendance at the community college • Admissions Open House held in fall - panel discussion of four year colleges • Spring Admissions program presenting entire college’s staff and programs to potential students • Meeting with Advisement • Appointment with transfer counselor

  6. Transfer Timetable • Important tasks for the community college student based on number of credits earned • Emphasizes the need to start early • Emphasizes the developmental process of transfer • Encourages the student to take responsibility for his/her own transfer

  7. Counseling the transfer student • Individual appointments • NJTransfer.org • Teaching how to read a website • Transfer Workshops-How to Transfer, discipline based and workshops conducted by local colleges • Dual Admissions and Dual Degree Programs • NJ Stars • Teaching decision making skills • Visits to colleges and universities

  8. Other Ideas • Life After Mercer bulletin board • Life After Mercer workshop with Mercer alumni who have already transferred • Focus groups to gain information • Survey current and past transfer students
