Mission of GEAR UP FEDERAL: The GEAR UP Program is a discretionary grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. HCPS GEARUP: To support the vertical articulation of 6th & 7th grade student cohorts through high school completion.

  3. Partnership Grants Must • Promote rigorous academic coursework. • Work with a whole grade level of students. • Start students no later than 7th grade and follow cohort through high school graduation. • Inform students and parents about college options and financial aid.

  4. GEARUPMajor Focus: We will work to strengthen these areas in order to increase knowledge and interest in higher learning for both participants and their families. Academics Professional Development Parent Community

US DOE Objectives • Increase the academic performance and preparation for post-secondary education for GEARUP students. • Increase the rate of high school graduation and participation in post secondary education for GEARUP students. • Increase GEARUP students’ and their families’ knowledge of post secondary education options, preparation and financing.

  6. US Department of EducationApproved Activities: Tutoring - Fundamental to supporting classroom instruction, tutoring supports commitment and incremental success vital to motivating students. Professional Development and Curriculum Improvement - Strengthening subject matter knowledge and teaching skills among classroom teachers is integral to GEAR UP’s mission. GEARUP supports teacher training, and other professional resources to strengthen classroom instruction. After-School and Saturday Programs - GEAR UP funds can be used to extend the school day and week by providing teachers, classrooms, and materials for after school programs.

  7. United States Department of EducationApproved Activities: (cont.) Summer Programs – Can be offered on college campuses as residential or day programs to increase academic readiness and general college exposure. 21st Century Scholar Certificates - All GEAR UP students will receive a 21st Century Scholar Certificate congratulating them on their commitment and summarizing how Federal aid may be available to them. Financial Counseling - Research indicates that low-income families often overestimate the cost of higher education. Counseling can help families learn about college cost or the numerous forms of financial assistance that help students pay for college.

  12. FCAT Levels • There are five categories of achievement that describe the success students have with the content tested on the FCAT reading and mathematics. • Level 5 - highest • Levels 3 and above - on or above grade level • Level 1 - lowest
