  3. Physical Geography • Also known as the Indian Subcontinent • Most Part of it is a Cone Shaped Peninsula • There are 8 nations in South Asia: • Bangladesh • Bhutan • India • Maldives • Nepal • Pakistan • Sri Lanka • Afghanistan Br. Siraj

Topography • Himalayas are in the North and Northwest • Khyber Pass is the only opening between the subcontinent and Central Asia • The Indo-Gangatic Plains [Hindustan Plain] are South of the Himalayas where majority of the people live. • Deccan Plateau: Highlands in the south • Thar desert in the West. Bodies of Water • Rivers – There are 3 main river systems • Indus River system: • Originates in the Himalayas, Flows through Pakistan into the Arabian Sea • Ganges and Brahmaputra River Systems: Originates in the Himalayas, flow through India, converge in Bangladesh and falls into the Bay of Bengal. • There are many other rivers and tributaries.   6. Bodies of Water • Seas: Indian Ocean [Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal] Surrounds the Subcontinent from three sides. Br. Siraj

  7. Climate • Monsoon: Seasonal Wind that Affects South Asia • Summer Monsoon: Blows from Southwest to Northeast, carries cool moist air • Blows from April to October. Br. Siraj

  8. Monsoon • If the monsoon is too strong than there is drought • If the Summer Monsoon is weak that causes flooding • Winter Monsoon • Blows from Northeast to Southwest • Carries cold and dry continental air • Monsoon winds have great effect on crop Production in the Subcontinent Br. Siraj
