National Facts and Statistics • Around 48.5% students will become so depressed during their time in college that they will consider suicide. • Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among adolescents, and the 2nd among college students. • Approximately 1100 college students die each year by suicide. • 8-10% of college students report suicidal ideation each year. • Females are 3 to 5 times more likely to attempt suicide, but males are 4 to 5 times more likely to complete suicide

  8. Risk Factors are stressful events, situations, or conditions in a person’s life that may increase the likelihood of attempting or dying by suicide. Risk Factors

Bio-Psycho-Social-Cultural-Environmental • Loss of relationship • Mental Illness • Substance Abuse • Hopelessness • Impulsiveness or Aggressiveness • Trauma/Abuse/Bullying • Major Physical Illness • Family History of Suicide • Pre-existing Vulnerability (obese, GLBTQ, awkward, G&T …) • Previous Suicide Attempt • Loss of job • Exposure to clusters of suicide

Protective Factors • Connections to family and community support • Connections to friends • Ongoing medical and mental health care relationships • Skills in problem solving, conflict resolution and nonviolent handling of disputes • Restricted access to highly lethal means • Help seeking behaviors

  11. What to do and say: I feel concerned… …when you write about hopelessness. I want you to walk with me to the Counseling Center.

  12. ASK ABOUT SUICIDE! • It is the most important step. • If you cannot do it, find someone who can! BE DIRECT! • Do you want to kill yourself? • Are you thinking about suicide?
