  3. Active and Automatic Occupant Protection • Active protection • Features require action by the occupant • Automatic protection • Features are built into the vehicle • Protects without any action by the occupant

  4. Active Protection • Lap/shoulder belts • Child restraint systems • Lap belts

  5. Automatic Seat Belts Door or Track-mounted shoulder belt with manual lap belt

  8. How Do Air Bags Protect People? • Spread the crash forces over a large part of the body • Are used one time only; must be replaced after a crash • Must be used with seat belt

  9. Air Bag Warnings • Always on sun visor • Sometimes on air bag cover • Sometimes inside door • Sometimes on seat belt or vehicle seat • Can be almost anywhere

  12. Air Bag Active Suppression:On-Off Switches • Check owner’s manual to see if on-off switch is present • May be installed if switch has been approved by NHTSA

  13. Air Bag Automatic Suppression • May suppress passenger side air bag for smaller occupant or if seat is empty • Check owner’s manual to see if passive suppression is present • Identify location of indicator light • Identify how system works
