  2. WHERE DOES IT HAPPEN? • At school both inside and out • Playing out • Home • Work • It happens everywhere

  3. WHY IT HAPPENS? • Why bullies bully? • To appear confident/cool • To be in charge • To get attention • To get things from the victim • To make others afraid/respect them

  4. OTHER REASONS Jealousy Because they are bullied To fit in with a gang There are lots and lots of reasons

  5. PHYSICAL VERBALEMOTIONAL STEALING KICKING NAME CALLING TEASING EXCLUDING HUMILIATING TYPES OF BULLYING

  6. KNOW YOUR BULLY • Three types • Confident aggressive bully who wants to feel secure • This is the one we recognize easily!

  7. KNOW YOUR BULLY • The anxious bully • This person tends to be less popular and weaker in school • This person may have become a bully to hide this

  8. KNOW YOUR BULLY • The bully victim • This type tends to have been bullied before by others and is, he feels “getting his own back” • This type also tends not to be popular

  9. School will have policy • You have the right to a safe environment • Your school encourages you to speak out • It will investigate incidents fully and seek to resolve the problem

  10. School will help • BUT you must be sensible and report it • Bullying will only thrive where there is silence and fear • Do not have bullies in your circle of friends

  11. Advice and Guidance • If you are bullied it is NOT your fault • Take action speak out • Do not retaliate • Do not ‘buy off’ the bully with presents

  12. DO NOT IGNORE IT • Telling an adult will make it better not worse • Your school will want to stop the bullying • Bullying may be a crime!!

  13. CRIMINAL BULLIES • Theft of your things • Vandalism of your things • Violence against you. If adults punch/kick someone and the police are involved the adult may go to court

  14. Dealing with bullies • CRIMINALS ARE DEALT WITH BY THE COURTS YOUR SCHOOL MAY HAVE OTHERS METHODS • DETENTION • HAVE TO SAY SORRY AND HEAR HOW THE VICTIM FELT • HAVE TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE VICTIM TO MAKE UP FOR THE BULLYING • LOSS OF A TREAT

  15. WHY ARE CRIMINALS PUNISHED? • RESTORE THE BALANCE THE CRIMINAL HAS TAKEN AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE EG BY STEALING FROM THE VICTIM

  16. PURPOSE OF PUNISHMENT • TO MAKE THEM SO AFRAID HE / SHE WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN • REFORM THEM MAKE HIM/HER SEE WHY IT IS WRONG

  17. DOES PUNISHEMNT WORK? SOME QUESTIONS • ARE YOU LESS LIKELY TO DO THE ACT AGAIN IF YOU ARE PUNISHED? • SHOULD YOU BE PUNISHED MORE HARSHLY IF YOU CONTINUE TO DO WRONG AGAIN AND AGAIN? • THE ALTERNATIVE: • BRINGING THE PARTIES TOGETHER TO SEEK TO RESOLVE THE CONFLICT MAY HELP • LISTENING TO BOTH SIDES OF THE PROBLEMS AND SEEKING AN AGREED SOLUTION

  18. WHAT WORKS TO STOP BULLYING? • IF THE BULLY THINKS THEY WILL BE CAUGHT THEY MAY WELL THINK TWICE BEFORE THEY BULLY • DON’T BE PART OF THE BULLY’S CIRCLE OF FRIENDS • HELP ANYONE YOU SEE BEING BULLIED • KEEP YOUR SCHOOL A BULLY FREE ZONE
