  2. Understanding the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit. • The Holy Spirit dwells within every Christian. (e.g., Rom. 8:9, 11; 1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19; 2 Tim. 1:14; James 4:5).

  3. Romans 8:11 (NASB) But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.

  4. Understanding the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit. • The Holy Spirit dwells within every Christian. • Yet, many misunderstand how exactly this becomes a reality in the life of the Christian.

  5. Understanding the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit. • “Fellowship of the Holy Spirit” (2 Cor. 13:14) or His dwelling in us ought to be extremely important to us as Christians in day to day living for the Lord.

  6. By Obedience to the Gospel, Every Person Receives the Gift of the Holy Spirit. • Obedience to the gospel is required to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  7. Given forgiveness ANDthe gift of the Holy Spirit: Acts 2:38 (NASB) And Peter said to them, "Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  8. A promise for every generation of Christians: Acts 2:39 (NASB) "For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself.“ - cf. 2 Thes. 2:14

  9. By Obedience to the Gospel, Every Person Receives the Gift of the Holy Spirit. • Obedience to the gospel is required to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. • “The Holy Spirit is given to those who obey Him.”

  10. Acts 5:32 (NASB) “And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.” • The apostles did not say: “To us who obeyed Him.” What they said was all-inclusive of the obedient:“To those who obey Him.”

  11. “The Holy Spirit is given to those who OBEY Him” • “Obey” (PEITHARCHEO) means “to obey one in authority” (Vine) or “submit to authority” (Strong). This word is found only in Acts 5:29, 32; 27:21; Titus 3:1.

  12. “The Holy Spirit is given to those who OBEY Him” • Demonstrated on Pentecost when three thousand people submitted to the authority of Jesus, who God had made “both Lord and Christ” (Ac 2:36). • By obeying the authority of Christ to be baptized, each one received the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38, 41).

  13. The gift of the Holy Spirit is also God’s pledge of our eternal inheritance! Ephesians 1:13-14 (NASB) 13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation — having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.

  14. By Obedience to the Gospel, Every Person Receives the Gift of the Holy Spirit. • Obedience to the gospel is required to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. • “The Holy Spirit is given to those who obey Him.” • Absolutely essential to receiving the Holy Spirit is to be cleansed of sin.

  15. No one can receive the Holy Spirit without first having repented of their sins and been baptized into Christ for forgiveness of sins.

  16. Acts 2:38 (NASB) And Peter said to them, "Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  17. At Baptism, We are Made Holy! 1 Corinthians 6:11 (NASB) And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.

  18. The Holy Spirit Indwells Holy Christians. • The Holy Spirit will only indwell Christians who are holy. • The Spirit is a “Holy Spirit” (John 14:26) who indwells Christians who are holy. Each Christian must work to keep His temple holy!

  19. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (NASB) 16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.- cf. 2 Cor. 6:14-7:1

  20. The Holy Spirit Indwells Holy Christians. • The Holy Spirit will only indwell Christians who are holy. • The Holy Spirit will withdraw His presence due to our practice of sin.

  21. The Holy Spirit will withdraw His presence due to our practice of sin. • Many exclaim: God will never leave you nor forsake you! (Heb. 13:5b). • Yet, you can choose to leave Him by returning to sin (Heb. 3:12).

  22. The practice of sin grieves the Holy Spirit! Ephesians 4:30-31 (NASB) 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

  23. When you reject God’s word to practice sin, you also reject “God who gives His Holy Spirit toyou” (1 Thes. 4:3-8).

  24. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-6 (NASB) 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you…

  25. 1 Thessalonians 4:7-8 (NASB) 7 For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. 8 Consequently, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you.

  26. Does the Holy Spirit leave us each and every time we sin and then come back to indwell us after we have repented? YES!(cf. Isa. 59:2; 1 John 1:6, 9).

  27. For God to “draw near” to us after we commit sin, we must first draw near to Him in repentance (Jas 4:8-10). The same is true for the Spirit to indwell us.

  28. James 4:8-10 (NASB) 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

  29. Greater awareness that the Holy Spirit indwells us, serves as a powerful motivation for us not to sin and do what is right!

  30. God’s presence is compared to having the Holy Spirit (Ps. 51:11). We do not want the Holy Spirit to depart from us (due to sin) for even one moment!

  31. Psalms 51:9-11 (NASB) 9 Hide Thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Thy presence, and do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me.

  32. The Holy Spirit Indwells Holy Christians. • The Holy Spirit will only indwell Christians who are holy. • The Holy Spirit will withdraw His presence due to our practice of sin. • The Holy Spirit indwells Christians because they are saints, not sinners.

  33. 1 Corinthians 1:2 (NASB) To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

  34. Hebrews 12:14 (NKJV) Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:

  35. Christians do not resign to sin with the reasoning: “Well, everyone makes mistakes, everyone falls short sinning is unavoidable.”

  36. Christians are saints, not sinners. • Christians are not sinners who practice sin everyday, but saints who practice holiness everyday, fighting the good fight against sin everyday. • God says to us: “Be holy, for I am holy”(1 Peter 1:16; e.g. 1 Cor. 6:18-20)

  37. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 (NKJV) 18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.

  38. The Holy Spirit indwells Christians because they are saints, not sinners. • If we truly understand that the indwelling Holy Spirit requires our obedience to God’s word, then will do our best to obey and avoid sin. • For the Christian, the Holy Spirit does not regularly depart due to a chronic problem of sin, but continues to indwell the Christian who is holy.

  39. The Holy Spirit Indwells Holy Christians. • The Holy Spirit will only indwell Christians who are holy. • The Holy Spirit will withdraw His presence due to our practice of sin. • The Holy Spirit indwells Christians because they are saints, not sinners. • For the Spirit to dwell in us, we must “live by the Spirit.”

  40. We cannot “live in sin” and expect the Spirit to indwell us; instead, we must “live by the Spirit” (Gal. 5:25).

  41. A Command! Ephesians 5:18 (NASB) And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit.

  42. How to obey Ephesians 5:18 Not to be filled with miraculous gifts (e.g. Acts 2:4), but to partake of the moral qualities of the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:3; 13:52; Gal. 5:22-23).

  43. Example: Acts 6:3 (NASB) “But select from among you, brethren, seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.”

  44. Example: Acts 13:52 (NASB) And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

  45. Galatians 5:22-23 (NASB) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

  46. The indwelling of the Spiritis not a fixed spiritual condition, but depends on our “walk in the Spirit” or lifestyle of holiness (Gal. 5:16-23).

  47. If we want the reward of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13-14), then we must also accept the responsibility of living by the Spirit everyday.

  48. Living by the Spirit Everyday. • The indwelling Spirit is not experienced by our feelings, but by obedient faith.

  49. 1 John 3:23-24 (NASB) 23 And this is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. 24 And the one who keeps His commandmentsabides in Him, and He in him. And we know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

  50. The indwelling Spirit is not experienced by our feelings, but by obedient faith. • The Spirit indwelling is NOT a mysterious, miraculous, and euphoric experience. • While it is true that the power of the Holy Spirit is invisible (John 3:8), it is not a mystery as to how He works in our lives.
