  2. What is Angiography ? • An angiogram is an X-ray test that uses a special dye and camera (fluoroscopy) to take pictures of the blood flow in an artery (such as the aorta) or a vein (such as the vena cava). An angiogram can be used to look at the arteries or veins in the head, arms, legs, chest, back, or belly.

  3. Why angiography is necessary? • An angiogram can show how serious your coronary artery disease is and how best to treat it. It shows if your coronary arteries are clogged, where they are clogged, and by how much. The test can help your doctor see if you need treatment such as medicines, angioplasty , or coronary artery bypass surgery .

  4. Angiography is performed using • x-rays with catheters • computed tomography (CT) • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

  5. Preparing for an Angiography Before having an angiogram, you may be asked to attend a hospital appointment to check that you can have the test. • being asked about your medical history, including if you have any allergies • being asked about any medication you're taking – you'll be told if you need to stop taking it before the test • having a number of tests to check your general health, including a physical examination and blood tests

  6. The Angiography procedure For the test: • A small cut is made in the skin over one of your arteries, usually near your groin or wrist – local anaesthetic is used to numb the area so it doesn't hurt . • a long, thin, flexible tube (catheter) is inserted into the artery and is carefully guided to the area being examined – you may feel some pushing and pulling when this is done, but it shouldn't be painful • a series of X-rays are taken as the dye flows through your blood vessels
