  3. MISSON STATEMENT • To provide government services to federal workers • To ensure government workers are treated fairly and with dignity • Work to secure the largest federal pay increase since 1980

Employee Union • Membership: 220,000 (active/retired) • Number of Locals: 1,100 • Workers Represented by AFGE: 600,000 • Men and women in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia. • Government at every federal agency depend upon AFGE for legal representation, legislative advocacy, technical expertise and informational services.

Gov.; 250,000 based in the Washington, D.C. area, metropolitan area; 1.5 million work in field offices throughout the U.S. • The majority work in federal offices across the nation as mechanics, lawyers, correctional officers, environmentalists, nurses, mine inspectors and more. The range of jobs performed by both D.C. and federal government employees is impressive—and so is their work.

  6. History • 42 founders from a variety of federal agencies created AFGE in 1932. • AFGE believes that all unions should belong to the house of labor and has been nationally affiliated with the AFL-CIO since AFGE was founded in 1932

Occupational Diversity: • Food inspectors, nurses, printers, cartographers, lawyers, police officers, census workers, OSHA inspectors, janitors, truck drivers, secretaries, artists, plumbers, immigration inspectors, scientists, doctors, cowboys, park rangers, computer programmers, foreign service workers, airplane mechanics, environmentalists, writers.

  11. Organizational Structure: • We have 12 regional district offices, each directed by a national vice president, administer support services to locals. AFGE bargains for working conditions and terms of employment under Title VII of the Civil Service Reform Act. The pay and benefits of federal workers are established by Congress thought the legislative process. AFGE lobbies and testifies extensively on issues important to government workers.
