  1. Importance of Cation Disorder in MagnetocaloricsCasey W. Miller, University of South Florida, DMR 0953733 The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) holds promise for developing highly efficient magnetic refrigeration. We are using nanoscience to explore magnetic materials that exhibit large MCE in bulk form. This bottom up approach may enable the design of materials with enhanced or tunable MCE. Here, we have examined the MCE in 30 nm thick films of the metallic oxide La0.56Sr0.44MnO3 prepared two ways: a random alloy via codeposition of La and Sr, and a superlattice with alternating La and Sr layers. We find that the MCE properties (entropy change and relative cooling power) of the alloy are superior to those of the superlattice. This observation may enable optimization of the MCE by maximizing cation disorder. Collaborator: Dr. Tiffany Santos, Argonne National Lab
