  1. Worth the Weight *I can identify items that weigh about a gram. *I can identify items that weigh about a kilogram.

  2. Metric Measure Gram One large paperclip weighs about one gram.

  3. Look around the room, from where you are sitting, and see if you can find some items that you think might weigh about a gram. Record the items on your gram recording sheet under “Object.”

  4. Directions: Hold the item to estimate its weight. Measure its weight using a spring scale. Write down the actual weight of each item. When you are finished measuring, be ready to share your answers about the following questions. How did you make your estimates? Why are the items you chose appropriate to measure in grams?

  5. Metric Measure Kilogram One kilogram weighs about the same as one liter of water. 1 Liter of water

  6. Look around the room, from where you are sitting, and see if you can find some items that you think might weigh about a kilogram. Record the items on your kilogram recording sheet under “Object.”

  8. Why is it important to associate items with a weight? Explain which unit of measure, gram or kilogram, would be best to use when measuring a student’s library book.
