  1. AP Environmental Science • Mr. Grant • Lesson 86 Industrial Solid Waste & Hazardous Waste

  2. Objectives: • Define the term Superfund program. • Discuss industrial solid waste management and principles of industrial ecology. • Assess issues in management of hazardous waste. • TED - Artist Dianna Cohen shares some tough truths about plastic pollution in the ocean and in our lives -- and some thoughts on how to free ourselves from the plastic gyre.

  3. Define the term Superfund program. Superfund Program

  4. Discuss industrial solid waste management and principles of industrial ecology. • Industrial waste management is similar to that of municipal solid waste management. • Industrial ecology urges industrial systems to mimic ecological systems and provides ways for industry to increase its efficiency.

  5. Industrial solid waste

  6. Regulation and economics influence waste ARC is required by each State or local government to maintain permits for the handling, recycling and disposal of e-waste and toxic materials.

  7. Physical and economic efficiency

  8. Industrial ecology

  9. Businesses are adopting industrial ecology

  10. An example of industrial ecology The Swiss Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives (ZERI) Foundation sponsors innovative projects that create goods and services without generating waste

  11. Assess issues in management of hazardous waste. • Hazardous waste is… • ignitable • corrosive • reactive • toxic • Electronic waste is considered hazardous. • Hazardous waste… • is regulated and monitored • yet illegal dumping remains a problem • no fully satisfactory method of disposal has been devised • clean-up is a long and expensive process

  12. Hazardous waste

  13. Hazardous wastes have diverse sources

  14. Organic compounds can be hazardous

  15. Heavy metals can be hazardous Heavy metals may be present in televisions, lipstick, ceramics, paints, costume jewelry.

  16. “E-waste” is a new and growing problem

  17. Several steps precede disposal of hazardous waste

  18. Disposing of hazardous waste

  19. Illegal dumping of hazardous waste

  20. Three disposal methods for hazardous waste Landfills

  21. Surface impoundments

  22. Deep-well injection

  23. Radioactive waste is especially hazardous Barrels of radioactive waste are emptied into a salt mine.

  24. Contaminated sites are being slowly cleaned up

  25. Superfund

  26. The Superfund process

  27. Superfund: harmful sites

  28. Who pays for cleanup?

  29. TED Video Dianna Cohen co-founded the Plastic Pollution Coalition, which is working to help end our cycle of plastics use. Dianna Cohen: Tough truths about plastic pollution (5:18) "Having worked with the plastic bag as my primary material for the past fifteen years, all of the obvious references to recycling, first-world culture, class, high and low art give way to an almost formal process which reflects the unique flexibility of the medium.“ - Dianna Cohen
