  1. Scottish Natural HeritageGREENING OUR TRAVEL • CUTTING SNH TRAVEL CO2 EMISSIONS • 7% drop in travel emissions this year • cut of 23% in the last five years • on track for our 2020 targets • fleet size cut by 7% each year KEY CONTACT Sheila Currie Scottish Natural Heritage SNH Greening Officer Great Glen House Leachkin Road Inverness IV3 8NW Tel. 01463 725073 Email: sheila.currie@snh.gov.uk • OPERATIONAL CHALLENGES OF A NATIONAL ORGANISATION • The problem was… • We have workplaces in ALL of Scotland • (see the blue dots) • Our customers - and nature - are • in remote and island areas • as well as towns and cities • and we need to be there • Goals/objectives for instigating change? • Which bits of travel can we control? • We protect “office to nature” travel • - (that’s our core work) • We try to cut “office to partner” travel • We focus efforts to cut “office to office” travel, • as we control both ends and can use Policy and Practice and • Management to achieve our goals • HOW WE DID IT • Video Conference kits in 28 workplaces • Vehicle Admin System (with trackers in pool cars) • Annual Carbon Budgets (allocations) for all Unit Managers • Efficient driver training for 140 staff • Maximising existing systems – we added vehicles to our online room booking system (‘Book it’)… • EVIDENCE BASE FOR FEWER, GREENER, • SMALLER CARS • Vehicle trackers in the pool fleet tell us: • - speed, fuel efficiency, location and how often it is used • Carbon Budget Allocations tell managers: • - how THEIR efforts match THEIR local budgets, and what THEY need to do to balance THEIR budgets (we DO help them!) • ‘Book it’ means: • - when a car is booked, you get the greenest one available for the journey. • - where journeys overlap, colleagues are asked to share a car. • Collectively, these tools aid management of the fleet using ACTUAL needs of staff, rather than PERCEIVED needs. NEXT STEPS: SMARTER REPORTING We built a Greening Database to host all our Greening/Carbon data AND to produce standard and tailored reporting for managers and anyone. This is an extension of our Property Asset Management system (PAMS)… We already share PAMS with other bodies, and hope to share the Greening section too…ask us if you’re interested!
