Objective: I can synthesize main ideas across nonfiction texts. Warm Up (in your composition book) Copy your objective into you comp book. Turn to pg. 332 in your IR book and read the section HOW CAN WE UNCOVER THE PAST? Complete the QUICKWRITE activity in the sidebar. Read the paragraph below that and define what it means to SYNTHESIZE INFORMATION.

  2. Synthesizing information to read multiple sources on the same topic and then combining that information from different sources into a full understanding of the topic.

  3. A SYNTHESIZE INFORMATION: Preview the selection's title and scan the text and graphic aids. What do you think the selection will be about?

  4. B SYNTHESIZE INFORMATION: What is the focus of the information presented in lines 12-21?

  5. What is another word or phrase that could be used to express the same idea as SURPASSES in lines 24-27?

  6. C SYNTHESIZE INFORMATION: Writers sometimes include information in graphic aids such as a map. What information does this map convey about the size of Shih Huang Ti's empire and the size of China? Circle the part of the map that tells you this.

  7. D SET A PURPOSE FOR READING: What do you learn about Shih Huang Ti in lines 44-50. Record this information in the chart below.
