  1. Causes of Plate Movement

  2. How do we know that plates move? We know that the plates are moving because of earthquakes and volcanoes.

  3. To understand plate movement you must remember the structure inside the Earth. Notice that the mantle is broken into the upper and lower mantle. The upper mantle or asthenosphere provides the plates a surface to move on.

  4. Three Hypotheses about Plate Movement Mantle Convection Ridge Push Slab Pull

  5. Mantle Convection Heat from the outer core is transferred through the mantle in a process called Mantle Convection.

  6. Ridge Push Molten magma comes up through a mid-ocean ridge. As it cools it pushes away from its original point. This force is called Ridge Push.

  7. Slab Pull As a subduction zone one plate is heaver than the other. The heavier plate begins to subduct beneath the lighter plate. The force that the sinking edge of the plate exerts on the rest of the plate is called slab pull.
