  1. Circulatory System

  2. Circulatory System • The overallfunction of the circulatory system is to transport substances throughout the body • The circulatory system is composed of the heart, blood, and blood vessels

  3. Lungs • Heart • Arteries • Veins • Capillaries

  4. Veins • Carry deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart, or from the heart to the lungs to pick of more oxygen

  5. Arteries • Carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body, or from the lungs to the heart

  6. Capillaries • Thin-walled blood vessels between arteries and veins where gas exchange takes place.

  7. Heart • The heart acts as a pump, pumping blood through the blood vessels to all parts of the body

  8. Blood • A type of connective tissue • Blood transports oxygen and nutrients to cells • Removes wastes from body cells, such as CO2

  9. Components of Blood • Blood is made up of four different substances: • red blood cells • white blood cells • platelets • plasma

  10. White Blood Cells • Make up only 1% of the volume of blood • Function: fight and destroy disease-causing bacteria and viruses

  11. Red Blood Cells • Make up half of the volume of blood • Bright red • No nuclei • Function: contain hemoglobin, a molecule that picks up and carries oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body

  12. Plasma • Makes up half of the volume of blood • Liquid portion of the blood • Function: carries blood cells, dissolved wastes, nutrients, and hormones

  13. Platelets • Small cells • Make up less than 1% of the volume of blood • Function: help the blood to clot, seal wounds, and stop bleeding

  14. Hemoglobin • The molecule in red blood cells that holds oxygen and carbon dioxide so that it can be transported

  15. Blood Pressure • Blood pressure is the pressure, or force, of the blood pushing on the walls of the blood vessels
