Support for School Improvement (SSI)1003(g) Schools • Participating schools have been identified as rapid improvement schools requiring immediate assistance. • NCLB Status – In Title I School Improvement (Year 1 and 2) • NCLB Status – Holding (Have not exited Title I School Improvement) • Participating schools have developed a school improvement plan using the Center on Innovation and Improvement (CII) Web-based system. • 82School Team Indicatorsused to develop plan. • Progress is monitored on-line by an assigned Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) contractor. • Two teachers and the building principal will attend four teacher leader training sessions based on 55 Success Indicators.

Teacher Leader Training • During the 2009-2010 school year, the VDOE will provide four days • of training for principals and teacher team leaders in rapid • improvement schools. • The purpose of the four, one-day sessions is to help the schools • build strong instructional teams in order to achieve the classroom • success indicators. • The session content has been developed by the CII in collaboration • with the VDOE, the Appalachia Regional Comprehensive Center • (ARCC), and the Virginia Foundation for Educational Leadership • (VFEL). • The “train-the-trainer” model will be used.

Teacher Leader Sessions • Session 1: Instructional Teams • This session will focus on practical methods for getting the most out of team time, introduce techniques for collegial learning (teacher-to-teacher coaching, mentoring, and peer observation), and outline strategies for team development of standards-alignment and differentiated units of instruction. • Session 2: Preparation and Classroom Management • In this session, the emphasis moves from the work of the instructional team to that of the individual teacher in preparing for instruction and managing the classroom. • Session 3: Teacher-Directed Whole-Class and Small-Group Instruction • Teacher-directed instruction in both whole-class and small-group situations is how teachers introduce lessons and new materials. Research provide sound indicators of effective teacher-directed instruction. In this session, principals and teacher team leaders will consider how they can help all teachers refine these skills. • Session 4: Other Modes of Instructional Delivery • Other modes of instructional delivery include student-directed small groups, cooperative learning, computer-based instruction, individual learning activities, and homework. This session will cover practical methods for planning differentiated instruction using a variety of modes.

  13. Teacher Leader Training2009-2010 Division representatives and Mentor Coaches representing each 1003(g) school will participate in four (4) teacher leader training modules provided by the VDOE. The first session will occur on Wednesday, July 29, 2009. 1003(g) schools will be divided into regional groups (example: Albemarle, Richmond City, and Henrico comprise one regional group). Division representatives and Mentor Coaches from the regional groups will present the four (4) teacher leader training modules in a joint session to their respective teacher leaders (two per school) and the building principals.
