  1. Micah – What Does God Want From You?Micah 1:1-9; 6:1-8 The world of the prophets is not very different than the way things are today. • We ignore the reality of evil around us because it makes us feel better. • This was the mindset of society in the time of Micah. • Micah preached to the people of Judah and Israel.

  2. The problem facing both nations stemmed from corruption that began with the leadership. • Micah 3:9-11a [NLT] – “Listen to me, you leaders of Israel! You hate justice and twist all that is right. You are building Jerusalem on a foundation of murder and corruption. You rulers make decisions based on bribes; you priests teach God’s laws only for a price; you prophets won’t prophesy unless you are paid.

  3. Micah 6:10-12 [NLT] – “What shall I say about the homes of the wicked filled with treasures gained by cheating? What about the disgusting practice of measuring out grain with dishonest measures? How can I tolerate your merchants who use dishonest scales and weights? The rich among you have become wealthy through extortion and violence. Your citizens are so used to lying that their tongues can no longer tell the truth.”

  4. The prophets were given a heavy burden of looking at our world and seeing what God sees and knowing what God knows and feeling what God feels, and it crushed them. They saw rich people trying to get richer, looking the other way while poor people died, and thinking God was really pretty pleased with their lives and the world was really gettingalong pretty well. Every one of the prophets learned this about people: we really don't want to know the truth about what our sin has done in our lives and to our world. We really would prefer not to know, because that would make us uncomfortable. Micah spoke for all the prophets when he said, "If a liar and deceiver comes and says, 'I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,' he would be just the prophet for this people” (Micah 2:11). (John Ortberg)

  5. People only want to hear affirmation that what they are doing is fine. • God had a different message. • What does God want from His people? • God Wants Us to Act Justly • God Wants Us to Love Mercy • God Wants Us to Walk Humbly With Him

  6. 1. God Wants Us to Act Justly • We all have an inherent sense of justice. • Ye Shiwen • Chinese gold • medal swimmer • An investigation begins to pursue justice.

  7. The pursuit of justice: • The Occupy Movement • The Women’s Liberation Movement • The Right to Life Movement • God is telling us through the prophet Micah that He wants us as His people to pursue His justice. • Justice: “to make right judgments” • God is calling us to choose to do what is right in what we say, the way we act, the way we treat people.

  8. Recall what Jesus said. • Matthew 25:35–36,40 [NIV] - For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you visited me…I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it for me.”

  9. When we ignore the needs in the world around us, it hurts Jesus too. • We are called to be a voice for justice: • in our schools • in our workplaces • in our homes • in our churches • God wants us to choose to do what is right – to act justly.

  10. 2. God Wants Us to Love Mercy • Mercy: Hebrew word chesed • A combination of the legal connotation of someone paying for what another person has done together with the kindness of unfailing love for another person. • King James Version: lovingkindness • An attribute of God’s very character. • Justice can be met when someone else foots the bill; when mercy steps in to cover the cost we couldn’t pay.

  11. That’s what God’s mercy did for us: • Micah tells us: You also love mercy! • God is saying through Micah – “Be like me.” • Micah 7:18 [NIV] – “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.”

  12. 3. God Wants Us to Walk Humbly With Him • First: we must be walking with God. • we have a relationship with Him • we are in communication with Him regularly • we are seeking Him daily • How we walk with God: HUMBLY • A true servant of God walks with Him in HUMILITY recognizing that we are just as sinful and broken as every other person. • Unless we are walking with God in humility, we will struggle with the first two requirements.

  13. This is what God says to us through the prophet Micah: • act justly • love mercy • walk humbly with Him. • Micah says…Listen up! • God says to Israel – didn’t I rescue you from Egypt! (Micah 6:3,4) • God says to you – didn’t I send my Son to rescue you from sin!

  14. God has a message for His people: • Do what’s right – no excuses • Demonstrate loving kindness – no exceptions • Be like Him… • How? • By continually walking humbly with Him.
